For those looking for some action around the nation’s 250th birthday, Delaware County plans to have more than 100 events starting in January 2026, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.
But first, the county celebrates its own 236th birthday and the founding of the Delaware County Historical Society on Sept. 26.
From Noon to 4 PM, the Delaware County Historical Society is hosting a free open house to the public at 9 W. Front Street in Media. There will be an opportunity to explore rare and unique items on display, including deeds from William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania.
Local leaders will make remarks, and there will be cake from 4 to 4:30 PM at the Delaware County Courthouse, 201 W. Front Street in Media.
From 5 to 7 PM, participating restaurants will host Birthday Cheers Receptions, with a Delaware County Historical Society 130th anniversary celebration at the Delco Institute of Science in Media.
“Delaware County is where Pennsylvania began, and we want you to begin your fun year of celebrations here in Delaware County,” said Andrea Silva, director of America250PADelco.
For the 250th anniversary celebration in 2026, Delaware County is coordinating at the local level with a collaborative project of events and programs that will include all 49 municipalities, heritage tourism sites, and civic organizations.
