The 2026 Semiquincentennial in Delaware County is going to be a celebration of the people, by the people, and for the people.
Andrea Silva wouldn’t have it any other way.
Silva is the chairman of the 20-member America250PADelco Commission overseeing the events, activities, and programs that will take place this year in Delaware County to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The commission is a bipartisan cross-section of Delaware County residents who bring a range of expertise to the task.
The umbrella organization’s main purpose is to connect with everybody to make sure we all have access to history.
Seventy historical organizations and sites in Delaware County are hard at work coming up with special programming for the year.
Silva has talked to historical organizations, municipalities, veterans groups, museums, businesses, higher educational institutions, labor organizations, and more.
“I said to them, ‘When I say America’s 250th birthday, what do you think that should look like?’”
That opened a door for everyone to come up with their own programs and events, their own perspectives on the nation’s founding and history.
So for 2026, expect the nation’s 250th to show up everywhere in Delaware County; in parades, festivals, concerts, special art exhibits, community events, unique wines and beer, restaurant and bar food and drink, in local merchandise, and, of course, at historical sites like the Brandywine Battlefield.
You can find a listing of ongoing events and details about Delaware County’s participation in the 250th at the America250PA Delco website.
“The ultimate goal is to have a menu of programs that the public can look at and decide where to visit because everybody has a place in America, and we want to make sure that we’re celebrating them,” Silva said. “These are many, many American voices deciding how this should be celebrated.”
The commission’s inclusive approach has resulted in some good feedback from organizations looking to participate in the 250th. That’s confirmed by the more than 3,000 emails Silva has received so far.
There’s a very large historical community in Delaware County, she said.
“You can’t walk anywhere in Delaware County without bumping into something that’s hundreds of years old,” she said.
People are ready for something positive, and they want to be proud of the country they live in. The 250th celebration gives them a place to feel good that they can share with neighbors, she added.
One way the commission is helping is through fundraising to support local nonprofits with marketing their events, and working as a clearing house to provide volunteers at historic sites, civic neighborhood projects, and beautification, and with help at parades and festivals.

Delaware County’s role in history
The 250th anniversary highlights not only Delaware County’s colonial history but also other moments in time when it helped advance democracy.
The county influenced people like civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who spent three years studying at Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland and who preached at Calvary Baptist Church in Chester, who walked along the banks of Chester Creek and looked down at the Delaware River.
The commission is also working to bring history to children, to instill a legacy of civic knowledge and pride.
Kids learn best through immersive experiences, and in 2026, there will be many field trip opportunities to battlefields, colonial farmsteads, and local historical societies, where they can talk in depth with historians about American life at specific periods of history.
“They’re going to fall in love with history this year,” Silva said.
The 250th coincides with events like the World Cup and the PGA Tournament, which will bring an estimated 4.7 million visitors to Delaware County, another opportunity to share Delaware County’s history and culture.
“We have a lot of this really wonderful history, and in 2026 you’ll see us package it up so that consumers can find things to do easily and learn more about that story, about the story behind the places,” Silva said.
