Sophie’s BBQ in Havertown Offers BBQ Done Right, with a Twist

Executive chef and Sophie’s BBQ owner Greg Herman is bringing his own Philly flair to barbecue in Havertown, writes Natalie Jason for 6abc.

You’ll find all the standard barbecue choices and classic sides at Sophie’s, but with culinary twists from Herman.

The restaurant is named after Herman’s daughter. The chef has been cooking since his teen years.

After years of working in fine dining, Herman found himself drawn back to barbecue.

“I didn’t think anybody was really doing it the right way around here,” he said.

Sophie’s BBQ was originally in Ardmore, but as the business grew, he needed more space, so he moved to Havertown in 2023.

Six weeks there, and a fire destroyed everything. The team rebuilt, and the restaurant has been a success ever since.

At Sophie’s, you’ll find things like a butterscotch swirl cornbread with orange honey vanilla butter, and a chicken-and-waffles dish with honey-whipped ricotta, candied bacon, and a sweet potato waffle.

Greg Herman also collaborates with Four Birds Distilling for drinks and offers Eagles game day packages that include wings, ribs, brisket, cheesesteak sandwiches, and more.

The restaurant is hosting Havertown Hog Roasts that will take place on Thursdays this month, starting Sept. 11.
