The iconic Rocky statue at the Philadelphia Museum of Art is getting a sequel, mirroring the film that inspired it, with a second casting planned for installation inside Philadelphia International Airport, writes Jesse Bunch for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The artwork is one of three originals created by A. Thomas Schomberg. The Philadelphia Department of Aviation made a plan to purchase the 10-foot-tall bronze casting with airport funds last year, after learning it was up for sale.
“The Department realized that this was a unique opportunity to enhance the guest experience by purchasing an iconic statue that is solely associated with the City of Philadelphia by its residents and people from near and far who travel to Philly to partake in its celebrity and story of triumph,” stated the department in a memo.
The statue will be placed in the airport’s Terminal A-West, where it will be seen by thousands of domestic and international travelers daily. The location was selected with Schomberg’s input, for its vaulted ceiling and dramatic backdrop of the airfield, as well as its modern appearance and lack of advertising.
