Advertisers are looking to take advantage of traffic congestion in the area, including on the Schuylkill Expressway, a freeway through southern Montgomery County and Philadelphia, writes Ariana Perez-Castells for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

According to new data from advertising company Oppizi, the Schuylkill at Roosevelt Boulevard is seventh on the list of the top ten worst congestion points in the country. The average car speed on the Schuylkill is 33.6 mph which falls to 25.3 mph during peak times.

“It’s a unique opportunity to have inventory next to some of those congestion points,” said Dylan Mabin, president of Geopath nonprofit. “People that are traveling on those roadways have a longer period of exposure.”

According to the nonprofit, Clear Channel, Lamar, Krain Outdoor Advertising, and Outfront Media are among the companies with billboards near Philadelphia’s most congested areas. A billboard in this area can cost from $10,000 to $17,000 a month.

“The reason I can charge so much for my signs is they’re the only ones from 30th Street out to Conshohocken,” said Larry Krain, of Krain Outdoor Advertising, who owns billboards on I-76 between City Avenue and Belmont Avenue.
