Hotels, Restaurants, Concert Facilities, Parks to Join Subaru Stadium in Chester

A map distributed by NBBJ at public meetings shows the Chester Waterfront Master Plan area, from Highland to Norris streets and the waterfront to Route 291.

With the home of the Philadelphia Union, Subuaru Park, firmly in place, developers now plan to add hotels, restaurants, indoor concert and sporting facilities and expanded park and marina space to Chester’s waterfront, writes Colin Ainsworth for the Daily Times.

And unlike previous West End waterfront redevelopment plans, this one is going to happen, say stakeholders.

“This isn’t a plan that we’ll allow to sit dormant. I know we’re going to put forth every effort to make sure we are able to develop our waterfront and complement the already brilliant entity that we have sitting on our waterfront,” said City Councilman William Morgan.

Work begins this month on building projects that will occur over 15 years.

The plan was laid out last week by the Boston-based architectural firm NBBJ, in consultation with Chicago-based Hunden Straetgic Advisors.

It is being funded by Riverfront Alliance of Delaware County member organizations. Sponsors include PECO, the Philadelphia Union, M&T Bank and the state Department of Community & Economic Development.

First phase will be infrastructure improvements on Rt. 291 and Engle Street, a proposed primary entrance to the waterfront.

The work will not affect traffic to the stadium.
