Vahe Gregorian gave up a Kansas City Chiefs game to officiate a special Swarthmore wedding, he writes for The Kansas City Star.

The wedding of Kelsey Hansen and Dylan Terenick.

In 1973, Gregorian was a young Swarthmore teen who befriended Becky Brown, then Cris Hansen, who later became a fireman and paramedic.

Becky and Cris married and 25 years ago had their first child, Kelsey.

Kelsey and her sister, Kristen, were in their early teens in 2008 when Cris died of esophageal cancer.

“The funeral was one of the most overwhelming experiences of my life, including the procession of fire trucks from all over Delaware County (and beyond?) and the aerial ladder arches provided by many fire companies along the route,” Gregorian wrote.

When Kelsey asked him to officiate her wedding, it was an indescribable thrill.

He walked with Dylan into the Scott Amphitheater at Swarthmore College and watched Kelsey and Kristen arrive on a Swarthmore Fire Department truck that had their father’s name on it.

It was, he wrote, a chance to be part of something special, “one of those moments in life when you really had to be there.”
