Villanova University professor Alexander Diaz-Lopez is one of the Philadelphia Business Journal’s 10 Millennials to Watch in Higher Education, writes Michelle Caffrey.

Diaz-Lopez, a native of Puerto Rico, decided to settle in the region because of its many opportunities in higher education. After graduating from Notre Dame, he arrived in Greater Philadelphia to take a visiting-professorship role at Swarthmore College.

He then became a full-time assistant professor of mathematics at Villanova University.

“I absolutely loved the area, and I wanted to stay,” said Diaz-Lopez.

He said that he’s been able to work with a myriad of teachers and students from all levels of education. And while working in academia does have some drawbacks – like the pay, which is often below private industry – the benefits are worth it.

“The main benefit I see in this region in terms of higher education and academia is the diversity that exists in the types of institutions that we have here,” he said.
