The Cobbs Creek Foundation and GAP have joined forces on a project at the Cobbs Creek Golf Course in Upper Darby and Philadelphia that reimagines the public golf course as a hub for learning, career pathways, and community building, writes Miklos Breitner for the Golf Business Monitor.

Through a cohesive campus experience, the partnership will introduce youth programming, adaptive athletics, STEM education, and professional development at Cobbs Creek Golf Course, seeking to redefine what a public golf facility can offer to its community.

“At Cobbs Creek, we believe golf should be open, inclusive, and accessible,” said Jeff Shanahan, president of the Cobbs Creek Foundation.

One of the initiative’s key innovations is the integration of GAP’s Youth on Course program at The Q School, a recently opened nine-hole short course at the Cobbs Creek campus. The program currently serves about 14,000 junior golfers, providing affordable access to a sport that often comes with a high financial barrier to entry.

Additionally, GAP’s affiliation with the First Green initiative, a STEM outreach program run by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, will allow elementary school students to use the Cobbs Creek green space as an environmental science laboratory.
