Tiger Woods Helps Dedicate Learning Lab at Cobbs Creek Course

Tiger Woods speaks with a woman at the new Learning Lab at the Cobbs Creek Golf Course.

Tiger Woods was at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday for his Learning Lab at the Cobbs Creek Golf Course, which straddles West Philadelphia and Upper Darby.

Woods’ TGR Foundation was primarily responsible for the Smilow Woodland TGR Learning Lab, which opened in April at the Cobbs Creek Course. The golf course is undergoing extensive renovations and upgrades.

Also attending were PA Gov. Josh Shapiro and Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker.

The lab provides free educational programming for children and teenagers, part of a plan to create a state-of-the-art golf and educational campus for Philadelphia youth, writes David Chang for NBC 10 Philadelphia.

The 30,000-square-foot facility features classrooms, a multipurpose room, a music recording room, a podcast studio, a Full-Wind golf simulator, and more.

“I didn’t start the foundation to produce golfers who hit golf balls. I started the foundation to produce the greatest humans possible,” Woods said during Monday’s event.

He wanted a place that people can call theirs, he said,  where they feel safe to learn and grow.

The Cobbs Creek location is in tribute to  Woods’ mentor, Charlie Sifford, a professional Black golfer who was allowed to play the Cobbs Creek Course at a time when he faced discrimination elsewhere.
