Suburban investment and urban need have come together in the revitalization of the Cobbs Creek Golf Club, writes J.F. Pirro for Main Line Today.
The historic Cobbs Creek Golf Club reaches into both Upper Darby and West Philadelphia.
A restored course will open there officially in 2027. Meanwhile, an all-inclusive, state-of-the-art golf and education campus is emerging now.
Golf club revenue will be invested back into educational and community programming and scholarships at the TGR Learning Lab, a STEAM-oriented facility on the campus that opened in April.
“We wanted to open the learning lab first because we always knew this was the biggest giveback to the community,” said Erin Cook of Newtown Square, who is the Cobbs Creek Foundation’s head of strategy execution. “Second is the campus hub building to start generating revenue to support the learning lab. The third phase is renovating the golf course, which creates the revenue to maintain the entire property.”
Main Line money and influence are heavily involved, but this is not a Main Line project. It’s something pertinent to the golf club’s neighborhood and the city, said Maria Stroup, TGR Learning Lab’s director of early education and community engagement.
