Delaware County got its own bell as part of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the nation, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.
A fiberglass bell sculpture was unveiled Oct. 20 and is on display at the ShopRite in the Drexeline Shopping Center in Drexel Hill.
It’s all part of the Bells Across PA public arts initiative from America250PA commemorating the coming 250th anniversary.
Artist Joshua Ruggeri of West Chester painted the bell, describing it as the “ultimate canvas of freedom.”
Ruggeri said he painted the Eagle soaring high, “probably after a Wawa coffee,” along with the Stars and Stripes, which stretch from Delco across the nation, along with Independence Hall and the Statue of Liberty, proof that “liberty, like a Delco accent, is not going anywhere.”
The art piece is sponsored by the Wakefern Food Corp. and Burns Family Neighborhood Markets.
Pat Burns, chair of America250PA and CEO of ShopRite, said the Delco bell captures the pride and hardworking spirit of the place we call home.
Ruggeri credited Burns with insisting on having “Delco” on the bell.
“Only someone from Delco would want Delco written on there,” he joshed. “I get it.”
