A Trainer Borough Police canine officer is trying to change the maligned reputation of pit bulls while helping them find a home.
Working with the Main Line Animal Rescue, Officer Rick Jones is combining his dog training expertise and a social media account to find families willing to adopt, writes Lee Anne Kayati for 6abc.
He works with the dogs through the police department’s Police for Paws program.
“Any dog, any age, can be trained,” he said. “I’ve been working with pit bulls now for a long time, and they’re fantastic dogs,” Jones said. “They have energy for a couple of minutes, and then they calm down and they just want to kind of hang out with you.
Trainer Police usually have three dogs in the program. When one gets adopted, they get a new dog.
Lisa Maggio, of the PSPCA & Main Line Animal Rescue, is thrilled with the Police for Paws program, which has been a great resource “for our pitties in particular in the bully breeds.”
The program also takes away the misinformation on the bully breeds out there and shows the trainability of a lot of these dogs, she said.
