The unveiled sculpture in Chester’s Subaru Park is emblematic of the stadium’s status as the first in Major League Soccer to be zero landfill.
Through a partnership between Subaru and the Philadelphia Union, the stadium has diverted more than one million pounds of waste.
The sculpture, appropriately in the shape of a giant soccer ball, is comprised of 12,000 upcycled pieces from the park.
Trenton-based recycling business TerraCycle’s in-house design team created the sculpture. The team fetched aluminum cans, plastic soda bottles, and caps,
During its reveal ahead of a Wednesday match, the installation got praise from fans, including the support group Sons of Ben.
In the spirit of sustainability, the support group created a custom tifo also made from upcycled materials.
“Whenever fans come to Subaru Park, they’ll be greeted by a beautiful reminder of the work they put in to make this stadium zero landfill and know that they may have contributed a piece to the sculpture,” said Tim McDermott, Philadelphia Union President.
