Paul Tufano, the CEO of the region’s largest Medicaid managed care company, AmeriHealth Caritas in Newtown Square, is stepping down effective Sept. 1, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Paul A. Tufano has been CEO since 2014. The company quadrupled in size under his watch, generating $20 billion in revenue last year.

“I am incredibly grateful to our associates for their significant and meaningful contributions to the growth and success of our company,” Tufano said in a statement.

AmeriHealth Caritas has more than 9,500 employees and operates in 13 states and Washington, D.C.

In a company statement, Tufano said he plans to spend more time with his family “while continuing to support innovative solutions to end poverty in this country.”

Thomas Hutton will be interim CEO during a national search for Tufano’s replacement.

Hutton is the executive vice president and general counsel of AmeriHealth Caritas’ parent company, Independence Health Group. He has been on the board of directors for AmeriHealth Caritas since 2020.

AmeriHealth Caritas offers health insurance, pharmaceutical benefit management and behavioral health services to its five million Medicaid, Medicare, Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Health Insurance Marketplace members.
