Delaware County holds its own in health rankings for its residents when compared to nearby counties, but it could do better, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

A study released Wednesday by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute looked at health outcomes and health factors.

There were 90 “health influencing” factors studied over more than 10 years. Those factors included housing, education, jobs, and access to quality health care, as well as physical activity, smoking, excessive drinking, and obesity.

Health outcomes looked at length and quality of life.

Chester County ranked as the healthiest of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, coming in first in health outcomes and factors.

Montgomery County finished fourth in outcomes and second in health factors. Bucks County made the top 10 in both categories, ranking seventh and sixth in the state.

Delaware County was in the top 20 for both categories, ranking 17th, and 13th, respectively.

“The rankings are important for Pennsylvania and to the Pennsylvania Public Health Association as data helps us understand the relationship between where we live, work and play – and where we can improve health equity,” said Stephanie Shell, executive director of the Pennsylvania Public Health Association.
