Delaware County Health Director Melissa Lyon has her hands full this week as she started her role today as the county’s new health director, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Lyon takes the reins as COVID numbers and syphilis cases are both running high.

The health department, still awaiting state approval to open, will follow a modern Public Health 3.0 model.

The new model builds healthy communities through strategic collaborations with traditional and non-traditional partners.

“The Pennsylvania Department of Health is very excited because we would be the first new Public Health 3.0 model health department and they hope that we would be the model for the future health departments in the state,” said Rosemarie Halt, chairman of the Delaware County Board of Health.

The focus through 2024 will be personal health.

Personal health includes immunizations for COVID and beyond, maternal and child health, communicable disease control; population health with a continued response to the pandemic, disease surveillance and health education; and environmental health from food, water, sewage, and pool inspections.

A recent lawsuit from seven municipalities to halt municipal inspections will not impede the department’s opening, Halt said.
