Cheyney’s Women’s Basketball Team in Final Four History Books

Cheyney University’s women’s basketball team from 1982, the Lady Wolves, is celebrating a 40th anniversary of its moment in history, reports Fox 29.

In 1982, the Lady Wolves made it to the NCAA Division I championship game, the only team from a historically Black college or university to play in the championship.

Going into the championship, which they lost to Louisiana Tech, the Lady Wolves ranked second in the nation and had a 23-game winning streak.

“It was very important for us to get there. We got there. We did great things and we created history,”  Valerie Walker told FOX 29

Cheyney is the first historically Black college or university and it was the only women’s basketball team to make it to the Final Four.

It was also the first team making it to the Final Four and a championship game that had an all-women coaching staff.

Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Coach C. Vivian Stringer led the team.  She made sure they were prepared, instilling in the players that they would never be defeated, said former player Yolanda Laney.

It was also the first Black coaching staff at an NCAA Division I finals.
