A grandmother will be receiving a bachelor’s degree in May from Cheyney University in social relations, with a concentration in criminal justice, writes Pete Bannon for the Daily Times.

Claire Lane, a retired Philadelphia police officer and detective for 20 years, will graduate with honors.

She already had an associate degree from the Community College of Philadelphia, earned while working full time as a police officer.

Following retirement, she ended up as an investigator for the Philadelphia public defender’s office.

Between working full time and raising a family, she never had a chance to pursue a bachelor’s degree and always wanted to go to Cheyney.

“I had always wanted to do that for my mother, too. She had always urged me to get an education, but I never finished and got that degree.”

Her daughter, Philadelphia Court of Commons Pleas Judge Timika Lane, was encouraging.

“When she told me she was thinking about going to Cheyney, she said she thought she was too old to go back to school. I told her she absolutely can do it, that age has nothing to do with it,” said Judge Lane.
