Cheyney Graduate Leads Successful Banni Peru Clothing Line
Cheyney graduate William Walker, founder of the Banni Peru clothing line, is responsible for the sleeker and hotter-looking down-filled puffy coat, writes Elizabeth Wellington for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The 29-year-old introduced the Deno coat back in 2017.
That coat has been embraced by celebrities such as rappers Fabolous, Dave East, and Dej Loaf, singer Teyana Taylor and Cardi B.
You can find it online and at Walker’s brand new Banni Peru boutique on 52nd Street in West Philly.
“Instagram posts have changed my life,” said Walker. “The Deno coat is my No. 1-selling item,” he said.
At 15, he distressed denim for Jill Scott and Musiq Soul Child at Kulture shop, a now-defunct boutique.
He also designed and made suits for young men in the neighborhood for the prom.
He graduated from PET Charter High School and continued designing suits at Cheyney University.
After graduation, he launched the Banni Peru brand in 2016 with a line of silk-screened T-shirts, then sweatsuits and hoodies. Promoting them on Instagram, they all sold out.
That led to the 2017 Deno coat. It wasn’t long before celebrities were posting photos on Instagram wearing Banni Peru.
