New York Deli in Drexel Hill Actually Features Peruvian Food
Peruvian food has found its way to Drexel Hill, writes Pete Bannan for the Daly Times.
Henry and Blanca Noemi Morales opened H&B New York Style Deli (offering Peruvian food with a touch of New York) at 3905 State Road last March.
The couple immigrated from Guatemala arriving separately in the United States. Henry came to Philadelphia in 2006 and started a landscaping business, H.M. Landscaping.
Noemi arrived in New York City.
“I was a dishwasher, then a waitress, then a kitchen assistant, and then a cook, and that is how I began to learn about Peruvian dishes,” she said.
Noemi moved to Philadelphia and met Henry working at Kohls. They eventually married.
The couple opened the restaurant using their knowledge of Peruvian food.
Food from Peru is one of the most varied and exquisite in the world, Noemi said..
So there’s bagels and cream cheese here, but the restaurant also serves Peru’s signature dish, ceviche, a seafood cocktail of marinated fresh fish or “cooked” in a large amount of lime juice.
Noemi’s Ceviche Mixto is topped with a cilantro red onion salad and served cold with sweet peas and “maiz cancha” – Peruvian corn.
