A 42,000 square-foot space at 555 Lancaster Ave. in Radnor, vacated by Philadelphia Sports Club, will be taken over by AFC Fitness, writes Natalie Kostelni for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The facility will open in June after a $4 million renovation. The new location will offer a new workout environment recognizing COVID-19 concerns, said owner Matt Litman, who has AFC Fitness centers in Bala Cynwyd and Feasterville.

Fabiano Designs out of New Jersey is handling the renovations.

“We’re reimagining the space, ripping out the floors, walls, locker rooms,” Litman said. “People like larger facilities to work out in and that was one of the issues with Radnor. It had tiny, closed-in spaces.”

Two large turf areas will be opened up.  Customers will also find a café, post-workout recovery space, and other modern amenities.

“It has changed but more and more people are coming back to work out,” Littman said. “We’re social creatures and want to see other people.”

In the 2020 COVID lockdown, gym operators were among the hardest hit.

In September 2020, Town Sports International Holdings Inc., which operated Philadelphia Sports Club, filed for bankruptcy protection.

Brandywine Realty Trust has owned the location since 2005.
