The bungee cord workout, the newest fitness sensation from Bangkok, is coming to Havertown, writes Mary Clare Fischer for Philadelphia magazine.

Pop Fit owner Christine DeFilippis flew the instructor in from Stories to Tales Theatre in Thailand to train her crew in the class.

Before the class starts, participants have to put on neoprene shorts to make sure their rock climbing-style harnesses do not chaff. Each bungee is then adjusted for the length and expected amount of resistance based on each person’s weight and height.

Workout moves range from squats to tricep-push-ups. The bungee cord helps with performing some of these, but the core still gets a really good workout.

According to DeFilippis, the format is good for older people who are looking for low-impact exercises and those who are overweight.

“The bungee’s assisting them — but they still have to work hard,” said DeFilippis.

Now that the training is completed, the studio at Manoa Shopping Center is preparing to start pop up classes next week. The regular bungee workout schedule will be announced in a month.
