In a normal year, fourth-graders at Widener Partnership Charter School in Chester each receive a holiday gift from their teachers, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

This year, teachers Jessica McIlhenney, Kallee Carney, and Jess Telese created an Amazon game wish list and shared it on Facebook and Nextdoor.com.

Twenty-four hours later, there were enough games for each fourth-grade student.

Then it happened. The teachers extended the request on Nextdoor.com. Suddenly there were 392 games, enough for every K-8 student in the school.

“After I created our Amazon wish list and shared it to Facebook, we received a few donations,” McIlhenney explained. “But, it wasn’t until Kallee Carney shared it on ‘Nextdoor – Ridley Park’ and all surrounding neighborhoods that it really took off.

“People wanted to help even after our initial goal was met. We weren’t sure if we could reach the whole school initially, but as our neighbors kept giving, the goal kept growing!”

The entire process lasted four days.

“We have been absolutely blown away by the generosity and kindness shown by our neighbors and surrounding neighborhoods,” McIlhenney said. “The outpouring of support, kindness, and generosity from our Delaware County and beyond neighborhoods was amazing!”
