It was a historic day Oct. 29 when coach Bill Coren informed the girls on the Strath Haven Cross Country team where they finished in the District 1 girls Class 3A championship at Lehigh University, writes Terry Toohey for papreplive.com.

That’s because the cross country runners were the first team in Strath Haven program history to win a district championship.

That also meant an advance to the PIAA state championship Nov. 6 in Hershey.

“We were all freaking out when we found out,” Stach said. “It was just mind-blowing,” said runner Gwen Stach.

A loss that day would have meant being left out of the state meet for the second year in a row since the pandemic kept the Central League teams away last season.

“Winning the team title is more exciting than having one star do well,” said senior Rowe Crawford. “And to be the first team to do it is just unbelievable.”

Other Delaware County runners also had a good day.

Ella Hines of Delco Christian won the Class A individual title, advancing to states. Penncrest’s Ruby Schweim will also advance

The Haverford girls team was third-place in 3A, also moving forward.
