Boardwalk Vegan has opened for business at 28 N. Manoa Road, promising the boardwalk flavors of the Jersey Shore using plant-based ingredients, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Kris and Randy Sumey had an award-winning special events business, Event FX Productions, Inc., until the pandemic wiped their business out.

“So this was sort of something that was built, was inspired and born out of despair,” Kris Sumey said.

Even as late as Valentine’s Day, Event FX was doing a huge event for the Hard Rock Casino.

Then the bottom dropped out with COVID-19. Event FX had no business.

Meanwhile, health concerns drove them both to adopt a plant-based diet.

It dramatically helped them. At the same time, they missed the boardwalk and the shore because of quarantining. They started creating plant-based versions of their favorite boardwalk foods.

True to their mission of wanting to make people happy, they took their new-found creations and opened up the vegan eatery on Manoa Road.

It’s all there, from plant-based pizza, to Boardwalk fries, cheesesteaks, Italian hoagies, funnel cake and much more.

“If it made it on the menu, it’s because we loved it,” Kris said.
