When Kaliesha Canady, 26, of Collingdale, took her driver’s test at Driven2Drive in late June, she discovered the test would take place in a parking lot and the examiner wouldn’t be in the car with her, writes Sophie Burkholder for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

She was relieved.

“With them being outside of the car, I was able to control my nerves and actually focus,” she said. “It was way easier overall.”

PennDOT had cancelled driver’s exams mid-March to May because of COVID-19. They will resume giving modified tests tomorrow.

“This test is so streamlined that if they know how to park, they’re basically going to pass the test,” said Ronit Tehrani, founder and co-owner of Driven2Drive.

Flaura Winston, founder and director of the Center for Injury Research, worries about the easier tests.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for adolescents, she pointed out.

A proposed state House bill would temporarily waive the road test in favor of a questionnaire and submission of practice hours so young household drivers would be able to help during the pandemic.

Winston still favors an on-road skills test and suggests a pilot program to study the proposal.
