The discount grocery store Lidl US is coming to East Baltimore Avenue in Clifton Heights as part of an expansion along the East Coast, writes Eric Mandel for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Fifty new stores are being added in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware by the end of 2021.

In Pennsylvania, along with Clifton Heights, stores are planned on Roosevelt Blvd. in Philadelphia, Yourk Road in Warminster, and Columbia Avenue in Lancaster.

“I can tell you that the Philadelphia area is a focus for Lidl, and we look forward to continuing to open stores,” said Lidl spokesman Will Harwood in a 2018 Philadelphia Business Journal article.

The German-based grocer is creating 2,000 new jobs along the Coast, investing more than $500 million in the stores.

Earlier in 2020, Lidl opened its third regional headquarters and distribution center in Cecil County, Md.

It is investing $100 million for a fourth distribution center in Covington, Ga. In the next two years.

Regionally, Lidl currently has eight stores Folsom, Port Richmond, Lansdale, Cherry Hill and Burlington.

In 2015, Lidl had ambitious plans to expand in the U.S. and the Philadelphia region but has since scaled back those plans.

The affordable German grocery store chain has been growing around the country. It’s considered a cross between Trader Joe’s and Harris Teeter.

As Lidl expands its footprint, Giant is also adding stores in Philadelphia.
