Lidl, the German supermarket chain, is asking Pennsylvania for $9.5 million in redevelopment grants for six of its stores, one of which is located in Ridley Township, writes Jacob Adelman for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lidl U.S. has applied for funding from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, which supports redevelopment projects that have potential for big economic impact.

Applications for the largest grants of $2 million each have been submitted for three Philadelphia locations. Also, $1 million has been requested for the store on MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township that opened last December.

“We often work with local government agencies and apply for available investment programs when we expand into new markets, including on sites that require remediation or rehabilitation,” said Lidl spokesman Will Harwood.

Lidl opened its first stores in the U.S. in June 2017 in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The store is known for its in-house labels that drastically undercut its competitors.

The company’s U.S. rollout, however, is not going as quickly as projected. This prompted Klaus Gehrig, chief executive of the Schwarz Group, Lidl’s parent company, to call the process a “catastrophe” in a German business magazine.
