Neumann Professor’s Study Finds Blacks Are Over-represented in Jobs Vulnerable to COVID-19 Impact

By

A study by Dr. Nathan Hardy, assistant professor of Marketing at Neumann University in Aston shows Blacks are under-represented when it comes to holding management positions, yet over-represented in healthcare and government work, and in jobs that  deal directly with the public that can’t be done remotely, reports hudsonvalleypress.com.

Even with employment growth from 2016 to 2018, Black under-representation in management occupations has gotten worse in the past three years, Dr. Hardy finds.

The study is based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau data.

As managers, Blacks are under-represented in advertising and promotions, farmers and agriculture, construction, and as editors.

They also are under-represented in professional STEM and doctor jobs requiring college degrees or certifications, such as statistical assistants, physical scientists, biological scientists and dentists.

They are over-represented in jobs that require little education and deal directly with the public, including postal service clerks, bailiffs, and corrections officers, taxi and bus drivers, phlebotomists, personal care aides and barbers.

“The government has long been a leader in equal opportunity employment for Blacks-it is time for businesses to step up its Back employment efforts,” Dr. Nathan Hardy says.
