A 13-year-old Haverford Township boy recently impressed the judges on the Food Networks’ “Kids Baking Championship Season 8” with his indoor hobby—baking  cupcakes, reports Vittoria Woodill for Philadelphia.cbslocal.com.

Avner Schwartz seems to have a flair for cupcake design using the simplest baking ingredients and a good imagination.

The cupcakes are easy for children of any age to make.

“Baking can be a really good, soothing activity,” Avner said. “It keeps your head distracted a little bit and it can lead to so many places. You can find your new favorite hobby.  It can be your new favorite thing to do.”

On a recent summer rainy day, he produced a ladybug cupcake and a Teddy Graham on the ocean.

Blue frosting for the ocean. Graham crackers for sand. A Teddy Graham in a lifesaver for a raft.

As Avner confidently produced his cupcakes, he talked about what is needed to do well in a baking competition.

“You have to have courage and bravery through it all because if you feel scared or if you feel you’re doing something wrong then you’ll have too much doubt and not be confident in what you’re doing.”
