Wawa continues to expand its options to sell beer at its convenience stores, writes by Katie Park for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Its efforts are altering the status quo regarding who sells alcohol in Pennsylvania.

“We’ve seen an increasing number of convenience stores applying for and receiving liquor licenses,” Shawn Kelly, a spokesperson for the PLCB, said Friday.

Wawa got its first Pennsylvania license to sell beer in 2019. Two of its Delaware County stores, in Chadds Ford and Middletown, sell beer and Wawa is hoping for beer sales in three more stores outside of Delaware County.

Outside Pennsylvania, Wawa stores offer alcohol products in 100 locations.

Even more aggressive in pursuit of alcohol sales is Sheetz.  It  sells beer at 223 of its Pennsylvania stores.

Outcompeting Wawa and Sheetz is the food delivery start up goPuff which offers beer in 500 cities, including Philadelphia.

Recent alcohol sale efforts in Pennsylvania  is part of a catch up that has already happened in other states.

“People come to Pennsylvania and can’t even believe they can’t buy alcohol in convenience stores,” said John Stanton, a professor of food marketing at St. Joseph’s University.
