Havertown producer and director Mike Tollin got noticed early in his career when he convinced basketball superstar Wilt Chamberlain to be part of his “Greatest Sports Legends” series, writes Layla A. Jones for billypenn.com.

Forty years later, the 64-year-old producer/director convinced Michael Jordan to be featured in “The Last Dance” chronicling Jordan’s career, particularly the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls championship season.

Turns out, Michael Jordan was moved by Tollin’s portrayal of Allen Iverson in his 2014 “Iverson” documentary.

“Watched that thing three times, made me cry. I love that little guy,” Jordan said to him, Tollin recalled. “That was kind of the clincher.”

Planned for a June 2020 release, “The Last Dance” came out months early for sports fans needing something to watch during the coronavirus lockdown.

It was destined Tollin would get into the Philly sports scene. His dad was local basketball star Sol Tollin, raised in Chester County and the best-known Jewish athlete in the Philadelphia region.

In 2009, Tollin and his dad were inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Tollin’s film and television credits are many, including “Varsity Blues,” “Hardball,” “Radio,” “Coach Carter,” “Smallville”, “One Tree Hill” and the Phillies’1980 World Series film.
