Coronavirus Update: Delaware County Has Lost 320 Residents to COVID-19 as of Tuesday

Editor”s Note: The Chester County Board of Health is reporting that the unusual jump in the number of Delaware County COVID-19 deaths reported by the PA Department of Health on May 5 reflects a reconciliation in systems between numbers previously reported by hospitals and coroners, and numbers provided to health departments.

This reconciliation includes a retrospective review of COVID-19 deaths between both original reporting systems.

There were 62 new deaths reported in Delaware County from complications of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, May 5, bringing the total number of deaths in the county to 320.

Of that total number, 234 occurred in a nursing home or personal care facility in the county.

COVID-19 deaths have been reported in 31 of the county’s 49 municipalities.

The following is a breakdown of COVID-19 fatalities listed by the Chester County Health Department by community in descending order of deaths reported:

There were 70 new positive tests of of COVID-19 in Delaware County as of Tuesday, May 5, bringing the total number of cases to 4,326, according to data from the Chester County Health Department.

That is the lowest number of new daily positive cases since the beginning of April, the previous being 72 reported on April 2 and 26.

The virus is reported in 48 of the 49 municipalities, with no cases reported in Rose Valley.

There are 200 cases still under investigation, to which no municipality has been assigned.

Yeadon Borough continues to have the highest percentage of population being affected by the virus. It has 266 cases, affecting 2.32 percent of its 11,471 population.

Upper Darby has the most reported cases, at 721, affecting .87 percent of Upper Darby’s 82,993 population.

The county has had 10,265 people test negative for the virus.

Pennsylvania data

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed as of midnight, May 5, that there are 865 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 50,957.

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania have cases of COVID-19.

The state reported an increase of 554 new deaths, bringing the statewide total to 3,012 deaths in Pennsylvania.

Of those, 2,029 were in nursing homes and personal care facilities.

The southeast region of the state, which includes Delaware, Philadelphia, Montgomery, Bucks and Chester Counties, has the highest number of COVID-19 positive confirmed cases in the state, at 32,556.  The northeast has the second highest number of cases, at 10,510.
