Pennsylvania officials that include Gov. Josh Shapiro and new Pennsylvania Attorney General Republican David Sunday are still trying to get Crozer Health ownership under a nonprofit to preserve health services and jobs in Delaware County.
They are working as bankruptcy proceedings continue in the background with Crozer owner Prospect Medical Holdings, writes Harold Brubaker for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Crozer is still critical to Delaware County, particularly in low-income areas. Emergency room visits to Crozer-Chester Medical Center outside Chester and Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park saw a combined 65,000 visitors in 2023.
State officials hope Crozer will achieve financial stability in six months and then be transferred to a new nonprofit.
Prospect Medical is declining comment, but Prospect’s bankruptcy attorney said in court that talks on a “controlled transfer” of Crozer were moving quickly.
It’s a hard sell drawing nonprofits to Crozer Health. Even if its liabilities are eliminated, including $167 million in mortgage debt, and a $100 million pension deficit, the older Crozer facilities need millions in investment.
“You lose your money the day you walk in the door,” said Jack Lynch, CEO of Main Line Health.
