Ten years ago, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alex Giannascoli was a Haverford High School student handing out home-recorded CDs of his music in the halls, writes Dan DeLuca for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Now known as (Sandy) Alex G., Giannascoli, 26, released his third album, House of Sugar in September.

His audience has steadily grown. He’s among a group who aid Philadelphia’s status as the rock epicenter of the 2010s.

But how much has changed in the way Giannascoli makes music?

“The creative process is really the same. I’m just in my house, or wherever, with a laptop,” said the songwriter.

Giannascoli started using Apple’s GarageBand in his early teens.

Plugging his instrument or a microphone into his laptop has been Giannascoli’s method ever since.

But he doesn’t like his homemade music labeled as “Bedroom Pop.”

“Every single time, I just want to make good music that people can listen to 100 times,” he says. “… I want people to be able to listen to it and attach themselves to it. Because that’s the music that I liked when I was growing up. I would hear it and be like, ‘This is my song.’ ”
