A Boothwyn manufacturing site for Pentec Health, a compounding and specialty pharmacy company, is laying off 73 employees and closing, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The job cuts, effective Jan. 4,, were disclosed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice the company filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

A Pentec representative said Thursday that the company had no comment on the matter.

In the filing, company officials said they made “the difficult decision to wind down its 503B operations” and close its plant at 9 Creek Parkway.

Compounding pharmacies create pharmaceutical preparations to meet the unique needs of an individual patient when a commercially available drug does not meet the patient’s needs.

A 503B pharmacy is as an outsourcing facility that produces large batches of medications, with or without prescriptions, that are sold to health care facilities.

Penntec will continue its 503A operations and its other sites in Boothwyn and Glen Mills will remain open.

A 503A pharmacy is a traditional compounding pharmacy that formulates compounded medications based on a prescription for a specific patient.

Pentec said it will continue to provide nutrition protein therapies for malnourished dialysis patients.
