Broomall Couple Shows Support for LGBT Community

By

Broomall residents Joan and Brian Bortnicker have become activists on behalf of the LGBT community, writes Ruth Rovner for the Delaware County News Network.

The Bortnickers co-founded a Media-based chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in 2009. Joan currently serves as its president.

The monthly meetings are attended by not only the parents and friends of people who identify as LGBT, but often by their siblings and other relatives.

The main focus of the meetings is support.

“We go around in a circle and people talk about their experiences and issues,” Joan said. “Everyone gives their feedback and it becomes very supportive. One of the tenets of PFLAG is that we don’t give advice. We give support.”

Another important tenet is confidentiality.

“Whatever happens in our meetings is strictly confidential,” she said.
