Ridley Park Native Lets His Conscience Talk Through His Music
John Flynn, a Delaware-based singer-songwriter who grew up in Ridley Park, is known for letting his strong social conscience shine through his music, writes Chris Kocher for the Binghamton (N.Y.) Press & Sun-Bulletin.
At the start of the millennium, Flynn was guided by his Catholic faith and sense of justice. After 9/11, Flynn found himself singing “God Bless America” during a Philadelphia Phillies game. Around 40,000 baseball fans sang along with him, making it a cathartic experience for the musician.
“I got this sense of spirit and courage, and I was so healed by it and so strengthened by it,” said Flynn, 60.

However, he soon noticed that courage buckles under fear and the desire for revenge, and he started writing songs about that.
“I had a guy from a record company tell me once that I was always evolving too fast for an audience to find me,” said Flynn. “He said that’s one of the reasons why I never caught on to a larger acceptance.”
