The Delaware County Symphony presents the final symphony concert of its season–The Koussevitzky Connection.

The concert program on May 7, 3 PM, features varied and inspiring music of the 20th Century. The concert takes place in Neumann University’s Meagher Theatre.

Serge Koussevitzky was the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1924 to 1949 and was a great champion of modern music.

The first work on the program, Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, was initially recorded in 1945 by Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Next, the Delaware County Symphony Youth Concerto Competition winner Sophia Nam will perform the Viola Concerto by British composer Sir William Walton.

Written in 1929, it is recognized as one of the greatest compositions for viola and orchestra.

The final piece is Symphony No. 2 by Howard Hanson. This symphony was commissioned by Koussevitzky for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1930. Often called the “Romantic” symphony, it is richly orchestrated with lyrical and lush melodies.

The Delaware County Symphony is a charter member of the Arts Guild at Neumann University, formed in 1991 to enhance the cultural programming available to the Delaware Valley community.
