Tour Celebrates Life and Times in Delco History

The Cumberland Cemetery and Middletown Hicksite Burying Grounds in Media are a stop on the Life and Times History Tour of western Delaware County.

A two-day “Life and Times Tour” of western Delaware County is giving people a chance to walk in the footsteps of people who settled and built the county, dating back to 1760.

“Each year, we set aside the month of September to shine a spotlight on the rich history of our county, and we urge our residents to explore many of the great historical sites we have throughout the county,” said Delaware County Councilman Dave White said.

“County Council is proud to partner with our historical and cultural organizations to preserve our history, and to keep that legacy alive for generations to come.”

Resident are invited to participate in the “Life and Times History Tour,” which takes place on Sept. 24 and 25. The tour is being organized by the historical societies in Aston, Bethel, Chichester, Concord, and Middletown townships.

These groups have partnered to plan two touring events. On Sept. 24, there will be free historian-guided tours of 10 sites in those municipalities. People can either join a car and bus caravan, or go on their own. There is a fee to ride the bus.

On Sunday, Sept. 25, there will be a special encampment at the Brandywine Battlefield, which will include musket demonstrations by soldier re-enactors, a blacksmith shop, and demonstrations of life in the 18th century. Admission to the Battlefield Park is $8 for adults, $5 for children.
