Regina Price is set to make history by becoming the first female police chief in Delaware County, as well as the first African-American female police chief in the state of Pennsylvania, according to the Delco Times.

The Darby Township Board of Commissioners unanimously hired Price in March. She is scheduled to be sworn in next week.

“We looked at her history over the 30 years,” Richard Womack, the township’s police commissioner, told the Delco Times. “She was a major who oversaw 60 patrolmen. She had very good leadership skills and she has extensive law-enforcement training.”

Price began her career with the Riviera Beach Police Department in Palm Beach County, Fla. in 1986 as a Patrol Officer. She worked in various divisions of the department and trained other officers. In 1996 she was promoted to sergeant, and in 2001 to the rank of lieutenant.

“As I was going through the process, I realized that if I were selected I would be the first female police chief in Delaware County,” Price said. “When they selected me and congratulated me, I was told I would be the first and only black female police chief in the entire state of Pennsylvania.”

Price was among a field of 12 impressive applicants. The search began back in November.

What impressed Womack the most was that she came to the interview process with a 90-day plan for the township.

“She was aggressive enough before her interview to research the township,” he said. “She knew the population, how many police officers we have. She could tell you where every church was in Darby Township, and she knew some of the trouble areas.

“She also talked to some residents. She really took an interest.”
