Haverford High Earns Governor’s Award for 85 Percent Student Voter Registration Success
Haverford High School recently received the Governor’s Civic Engagement Award at the gold level for registering 85 percent or more of eligible students to vote, writes Linda Stein for Main Line Media News.
Haverford was among four Philadelphia-area high schools given the award. Three other schools were recognized for registering at least 65 percent of their eligible students.
“The collective work and collaboration of our Young Democrat and Young Republican clubs should be an example for governing bodies everywhere,” said Haverford High School Principal Pete Donaghy.
The Governor’s Civic Engagement Award program, now in its second year, encourages eligible Pennsylvania high school students to participate in elections as voter registration drive organizers, voters and poll workers, according to a press release.
“This is an incredible achievement. You should be proud of yourselves,” Acting Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar told the students at the ceremony at Montgomery County Community College. “Thank you for engaging in the electoral process and educating your peers about it.”
This year, 23 high schools around the state earned GCEA awards and eight students won individual awards.
A regional recognition event for the winners was held at the State Museum in Harrisburg.
