Wawa Closes 43-Year-Old Marlton Store as the Chain Shifts Toward More Modern Locations

Wawa has shuttered its Route 73 store in Marlton after more than four decades, continuing a broader trend of retiring older locations across the Philadelphia region.

After 43 years, the Wawa at 491 Route 73 in Marlton has served its last hoagie.

The store closed on May 28, ending more than four decades of service at the corner of Route 73 and Brick Road, reports Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Wawa described the decision as the result of a “careful and extensive evaluation,” with company spokesperson Jennifer Wolf saying the location could no longer meet the customer experience standards or performance goals the company expects.

In other words, the 1983-era store had simply aged out of Wawa’s vision for what its locations should be.

Employees won’t be left without options. Wawa has offered affected staff positions at nearby stores, including locations on Route 70 in Marlton and East Evesham Road in Voorhees Township.

But the Marlton closure isn’t an isolated event; it’s part of a deliberate pattern.

Wawa has been quietly retiring older, smaller stores across the Philadelphia region, particularly those without gas pumps. Recent closures include locations in Cherry Hill, Collingswood, Northeast Philadelphia, and Port Richmond.

The company has also pulled back significantly from Center City, shutting nine downtown locations since 2020.

As Wawa pushes into new markets across the Southeast and Midwest, it’s betting big on larger travel centers, expanded fuel operations, and modern conveniences like mobile order pickup windows.

“We will continue to explore other locations throughout New Jersey and ways to serve our communities,” Wolf said.
