Historic Win at Aronimink: Aaron Rai Captures 2026 PGA Championship in Front of 200,000 Fans

Aaron Rai beams with pride as he hoists the Wanamaker Trophy after his historic victory at the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, becoming the first English-born player in more than a century to claim the title.

Aaron Rai made history Sunday, striding up the 18th fairway at Aronimink Golf Club as the roar of the crowd swelled around him, the 31-year-old Englishman about to claim the Wanamaker Trophy and etch his name into the story of the 2026 PGA Championship

Rai’s victory was as unlikely as it was electric, reports Ryan Hughes for CBS News Philadelphia.

Rising through the leaderboard when few saw it coming, he became the first English-born player in more than a century to secure the trophy, a fact that seemed to amplify every cheer echoing across the fairways of the iconic Newtown Square course.

“I think it’s absolutely crazy, he came out of nowhere from behind,” said spectator Michael Friel. “Just really happy for him.”

The atmosphere matched the drama. Fans endured a full range of conditions throughout the week, with wet, chilly rounds early on giving way to a sweltering Sunday that pushed temperatures close to 90 degrees. Many sought refuge in the shade of Aronimink’s tree-lined layout, but few strayed far from the action.

For local residents, the week carried a deeper meaning.

“I’m born and raised in Delco, still live here, so it’s pretty exciting for something like this to be here and be able to experience it,” said Chelsea Kelly.

With roughly 200,000 fans passing through the gates over the course of the week, the championship was a landmark moment for the region. Organizers from Frisco, Texas, host of the 2027 PGA Championship, were reportedly on-site taking notes.
