After 200,000 Fans and a Memorable PGA Champion, Aronimink Golf Club Is Already Looking Ahead

The Wanamaker Trophy at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square. Club leaders say the door is open for future majors after a record-breaking 2026 PGA Championship.

Aronimink Golf Club isn’t just basking in the afterglow of a wildly successful 2026 PGA Championship; it’s already thinking about what comes next.

The Newtown Square club drew roughly 200,000 spectators to the event, and according to John George of the Philadelphia Business Journal, club leaders believe that enthusiasm could pave the way for future major championships at the historic venue.

Mike Lewers, an Aronimink member who served as general chairman for the tournament, said the experience exceeded every expectation.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think that so many things would come together to make it a really special and memorable week for Aronimink Golf Club, for the Newtown Square area and Philadelphia golf,” he said.

For now, the focus is on returning to normal. Aronimink closed the course last November to begin preparations for the championship, and beginning this week, its 600 members will once again take to the Donald Ross-designed layout, playing the same demanding pin placements that challenged the world’s best golfers just days ago.

As for what’s next, Lewers was candid: no future championships have been officially announced, and the club doesn’t chase tournaments. Instead, Aronimink waits for organizations like the PGA of America to come calling.

“We wait for them to knock on our door,” said Lewers. “I think the likelihood of that happening again is, frankly, pretty good.”

It would hardly be a surprise. Aronimink has quietly reestablished itself as one of American golf’s premier venues, having previously hosted the 1962 PGA Championship, the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the 2003 Senior PGA Championship, the 2018 BMW Championship, and multiple AT&T National tournaments. The course is also ranked No. 100 on Golf Digest’s 2025–2026 list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.
