Shoppers at King of Prussia’s Costco may soon be able to add wine or beer to their bulk-buy runs, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The retail giant is working to expand alcohol sales in Pennsylvania, including plans tied to its King of Prussia location through a pending liquor license transfer within Upper Merion Township.
If approved, the store could sell wine, beer, and canned cocktails, aligning with similar offerings already seen at some Pennsylvania supermarkets operating under restaurant-style liquor licenses. Any on-site consumption would be limited to designated seating areas, with strict oversight including ID checks and trained staff managing sales.
The King of Prussia move is part of a broader push by Costco across the state, as it navigates Pennsylvania’s complex liquor laws. Under current regulations, retailers must meet specific requirements, including maintaining a food-service area and limiting how much alcohol can be purchased in a single transaction.
While the timeline for alcohol sales in King of Prussia remains unclear, the effort signals continued evolution in how major retailers operate within the state.
For Montgomery County shoppers, it could soon mean pairing a bulk grocery trip with a bottle of wine; all under one roof.
