After getting approval for a liquor license transfer, Costco plans to start selling wine, beer, and canned cocktails at its Warminster store, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The move is part of a larger push by the warehouse club, one of the nation’s largest wine sellers, to get into the wine and beer business in Pennsylvania.
Speaking at a March 5 hearing, Costco attorney Gregory Szallar of Flaherty & O’Hara told the Warminster Township Board of Supervisors that the store will not include a bar or sell draft beer or mixed drinks. Happy hour and outdoor drinking will not be allowed, with most sales focused on bottled and canned beverages to-go.
As required by state law, on-premises consumption would be limited to designated seating areas only. Customer identification would be scanned, and all liquor sales would be supervised by trained staff and a licensed manager.
Warminster approved the license transfer from the former Pizzeria Uno in Doylestown Township with conditions, including a ban on self-checkout alcohol sales and a limit of three registers for such purchases.
Szallar did not specify when Costco will begin selling alcohol in Warminster.
