Topaz Bryant was a home cook for nine years, then a caterer.
In September, Bryant took that next step and brought her soul food to a new restaurant, Mrs. B’s Catering, her first brick-and-mortar on South Springfield Road in Clifton Heights, reports Aunyea Lachelle for NBC 10 Philadelphia.
I did not know it was going to come this fast,” Bryant said. “When the opportunity comes, you’ve got to take it and let God work it because I did not see it coming.”
Her menu is based on her grandmother’s recipes, where less was more.
There are signature dishes like turkey wings over rice. The fried whiting is extra crispy and served with hot sauce.
And of course, there’s soul food classics like mac and cheese, or other sides like homemade potato salad or loaded seafood salad featuring crab meat and tuna.
“Some of my clients have told me, ‘I’ve had a bad day, and then I came and got your food,’ and it really made them feel better.”
She’s grateful to a community that supported her after her restaurant door was vandalized hours after opening.
That love was reciprocated on Nov. 24 when she hosted a turkey-and-coat drive and sold $10 platters.
