Chef Antonio Garcia, with the Italian restaurant Ariano in Media, is opening his own BYOB eatery in the borough, featuring the flavors of Mexico, writes Lisa Dukart for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Taquero focuses on Chef Garcia’s roots and was dreamed up about three years ago.
The restaurant opens Nov. 24 at 111 Veterans Square in a former office building.
Taquero will showcase a mix of traditional and modern Mexican cuisine, emphasizing authentic dishes.
The menu leans into Garcia’s hometown of Toluca, but also samples from elsewhere in the country.
Garcia said he wanted to do “something that’s going to make me proud, for me and my family.”
Some dishes come from Gracia’s grandmother, made when he was a child. Others come from the Mexico City street scene, where the chef spent time at nearly 25 years ago.
“Everybody says their grandma is the best cook. My grandma was, like, insane,” Garcia said. “Everything she cooked was so delicious.”
His grandmother’s fideo seco is a traditional Mexican pasta dish made in a chipotle broth and served with queso fresco, crema, lump crab, and avocado.
Other entrées include carne asada, enchiladas, a Mexican-style pork chop, and Mexican-style paella.
